Liene Rubane is a mixed-media visual artist working across illustration and 2D animation. Her practice explores self-discovery, the beauty of strangeness, and the absurd through surreal, enigmatic, and intuitive imagery rooted in memory.

Her work embraces a spectrum of emotions and conflicting feelings, while her experimental approach is guided by expressive hand gestures and an attention to the raw textures of materials. Moving between analogue and digital processes, she creates emotionally charged, psychologically resonant images that often exist somewhere between the familiar and the strange.

Liene began her career as a graphic and web designer before moving toward illustration and animation. She holds a Master’s degree in Transmedia from Sint-Lukas Brussels University College of Art and Design and has studied at Hochschule Hannover and the Art Academy of Latvia. For the past ten years, she has worked primarily on illustration and animation commissions, collaborating with animation directors, publishers, journalists, artists, and cultural projects.

Her illustration practice includes a contribution to the book Inventario de depredadores domésticos by Verena Cavalcante, published by Elefanta Editorial. Her animated films and art-directed projects have been selected for international film festivals across Europe, Latin America, Asia, and North America, and have received experimental film awards at Arte Non Stop Film Festival in Buenos Aires and Easier Video Fest in Baja California.
